Where can I find wool (or wool blend) yarn that is specifically for knitting socks?

A nice grandma knitted a few pairs of socks for my husband. Now I want to replace the ones that are wearing out by knitting some of my own. Joanne's and Micheal's (the local big craft stores) don't carry this type of yarn.

Where should I look? Cost is a factor, too. I am concerned if I go into a local yarn boutique the socks will cost too much to make!

Should I go to one anyways? Is there an online site that carries it in bulk so that they could pass the savings on to me? I am looking for white or off white yarn.

Try Smiley's on line Most yarn made specifically for socks are fancy, self-stripping these days, but you can find some yarns that would be thin enough for socks. My favorite web site for name brand yarns at a very good price is Smiley's: smileysyarns.com/ For socks, they have multi-colored "Cervinia Calzetteria", but you could also use "Wendy Peter Pan Baby Yarn", a mix of nylon and acrylic, or "Panda Woolbale", 100% wool. "Cervinia Amalfi" is also the right thickness, but it is 100% acrylic.

(drooling) I don’t recommend shopping here seriously, they are a bit insane price-wise, but it is reallly fun to look. Their patterns are nice.My local ’yarn boutique’ (never thought of it that way...now I am going to feel self-conscious about going in...) has reasonable selections.

They also have the designer, hand-painted alpaca wool, so I just don’t go into that room. It may be worth looking, if you are not (yet) a yarn hoarder.My experience with Michael’s and etc is that they do seasonal things with colors and yarns which don’t always have anything to do with what I want to make. Try KnitPicks online; they have good sales.

My favorite inexpensive yarn site is Knit Picks. (Their fine-grade double pointed needles are very reasonably priced and quick like a bunny to use, too!) If you’re a purist, this stuff is 100% superwash merino, at $4.29 a hank. However, socks made from this will wear out faster than ones made with yarn that has a little nylon or silk to strengthen it. Finally, the *really* good stuff!

70% Merino Wool, 30% Silk at $6.59/hank. The silk is strong and soft, and takes care of the need for nylon. Superwash wool is wool that has been treated so you can just throw it in the wash - no need to hand wash.

Very convenient! I don’t know if these prices are what you’re hoping for, because they’re expensive compared to just going to the K-Mart and buying a pack of socks. However, since you’ve experienced hand-knit socks before, you know that those store-bought ones really don’t compare, and that the cost (as long as it’s reasonable) is very much worth it.

I would buy two hanks per pair of socks, by the way, just to play it safe.It also depends on how tall or short you want the socks to be, and how big your sweetie’s feet are. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
