Jews migrated to places in Europe where they were encourage to live and work, or where they would be at least tolerated. One such place was Poland. There were parts of the Holy Roman Empire where they also lived in great numbers.
Importantly, a large number of them lived in Holland, and this number increased with migrations that took place after the Middle Ages at a time in the Renaissance marked by religious intolerance elsewhere.
