Challenger Disaster The Challenger Space Shuttle launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on January 28, 1986. It did not land, rather it exploded 73 seconds after launch, killing all seven astronauts on board. The debris landed in the Atlantic Ocean.
The recovery of debris spanned 480 square nautical miles at depths of up to 1200 feet, and 15 tons of debris were recovered. Some parts are still occasionally washed up.
