Where does the Name Ashley Come From?

The name Ashley is actually derived from an Old English name meaning "ash tree clearing. " In the 1960s, it was a name used most often for boys, but that obviously doesn't ring true at this present time. More girls have this name now, than boys do.

Hagerstown, Maryland is named after Jonathan Hager, a German immigrant, who was the first official settler of what is now Hagerstown, MD. Mr. Hager settled there in 1739. It was originally called Elizabeth Town after Jonathan’s wife.

The city is the largest in Washington County. Mr. Hager originally bought 200 acres and through the years the property was sold and added to by various people to become what it is today. The Zion Reformed Church is one of the oldest churches in the area and the cemetery has some of the earliest settlers in the region.
