Gary Danko. Not only is it the best restaurant in SF hands down (and it just earned its second Michelin star this year! ) but it's FAR less expensive than places like the French Laundry - you have have a decent meal for well under $75 per person.
In fact, I'd say they have the best seafood I've ever had in California at least. Amazing scallops, lobster salads, grilled and fried fish. Had a tremendous meal there two weeks ago.
If super high end is not your pick, though, try Swann Oyster Depot in the Polk Gulch neighborhood ... some of the best fish and oysters and clams I've ever had, super cheap, super (SUPER! ) fresh ... plus you'll be sitting between biker gang members, politicians and famous people... Hog Island has gone downhill, as has Farallon; the other places are good, but there are non "Seafood restaurants" that still have lots of seafood, like Gary Danko, which is better than everything on that list ... the Slanted Door is terrific too and not on there, because it takes them two or three years to update their lists. And Swann Oyster Depot is far better than Pearl... Everyone knows that.
