The 2011 tohoku earthquake and the fukushima reactor blowing up.
The change in leadership in Egypt and Libya have become important historical events in 2011. The Arab Spring is still an ongoing process so it doesn't qualify as yet. However, these 2 events have had concrete outcomes, the fall of authoritarian regimes that have been in power for decades in these 2 North African countries.
It was a tumultuous year. North Africa has broken free and left the US Sphere of Influence (for now). The US House of Representatives is divided on the two choices of whether to bankrupt the federal government or to let the US economy collapse.
They couldn't decide between the two and so passed no budget for 2011 and operated under a continuing resolution. Europe and the Middle East are in uprising. Economic progressive movements, not afraid to be labelled "communist", are taking place in the US for the first time since the 1930s.
For the first time, a US President ordered the assassination of a US citizen without due process of law. The president ordered the assassination of Osama bin Laden. The CIA has begun tapping anyone outside the US who mentions frustration at US foreign policy on the internet.
The president vetoed a peace treaty between the Palestinians and Israelis. Israel is on the verge of war with Iran. The now-Shia-controlled Iraq hangs tenuously within the US sphere of influence as our troops are withdrawn.
Some really terrible movies were made. Thankfully, the age of that oppressive brain box known as televison is spiralling into terminal decline. The Italians bought the Chrysler company, leaving only two US-based auto manufacturers remaining. An inarticulate, yet highly-informed generation is taken the place of the old brainwashed, yet articulate generation.
I'd say the Arab Spring, though that may not be counted as one event.
I think the death of Osama BIN laden will be..
Perhaps the Occupy protests as a whole, if not the other events listed.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
