Because in WW II the USA was not a welfare state, people were actually expected to work and support themselves.
Wine is partially correct. There are a few reasons there are more people receiving benefits than paying in. For one, there have been fewer people born to contribute since then.
The average family has half as many people than it did during WW2. That means that if all of the folks who have lived to received benefits are being covered by the fewer who have been born since then. Additionally, people are living longer so it will only get worse.
The economy was fueled by WW2 because a lot of men died and someone had to replace them in the workforce. Additionally, due to the devastation in Europe and Asia, many export manufacturing jobs were created to repair those economies. Finally, many of the technologies developed during WW2 were converted for peacetime and continued to boost the economy.
Contractors were used then as well during WW2. Who do you think built the bombers and fighter planes? Now, as to contractors, they actually save money.
More military personnel costs a lot more than contractors because you continue to pay them after they are no longer needed...either due to medical or retirement. You also have to pay to train them, feed them, house them and clothe them and outfit them. Contractors are already trained and pay for their own everything else either directly or by their companies.
These recent wars quite frankly did not kill enough people to boost the economy. This may sound harsh, but due to the high survival rate from injuries and the huge amount of support given during and after, the expense is enormous. I personally have benefited from this as I am a vet and contractor, but less than 10,000 total deaths in both Afghanistan and Iraq combined vs. some battles in WW2 that killed nearly that many and you can see why the difference.
BTW, the US was already recovering from the depression before being brought into WW2. The war just accelerated things.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
