I would have to say that Eric B. & Rakim were the most influential rap group ever. They only cut four albums, but some of their songs have been extremely popular with other hip-hop artists and they particularly inspired a lot of East coast rappers. At the time, hip-hop was still providing street commentary (like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five with "The Message"), but Rakim's lyrical style separated him because he liked to use a lot of vocabulary that others weren't using.
They also preferred classic jazz and soul for their samples and that was different too. It gave their songs a distinctive sound when compared to other artists. They were definitely a positive influence on hip-hop.
Rakim always seemed to speak from a social standpoint, but he used a lot of metaphors that the listeners may not have been familiar with, because he considered his lyrics as a form of education. They just started performing together again recently, but from what I understand, their breakup in 1992 was out of creative differences. Rakim is a devout Muslim and his lyrics took a decidedly religious turn when he went solo.
I now present the people's exhibit A: "Know the Ledge" from the original movie soundtrack for "Juice". Enjoy.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
