I'm going to echo the negative comments made about Bose. In short they are a scam. Trick the ear rather than reproduce accurate sound.
Rely on slick advertising and high prices"it's expensive - it must be good." True audiophiles have always been on to their trickery and have always disdained them. I have seen the exact comment by "mark_hensley" before.
I suspect he is a shill - he works for Bose. That is a "form letter" to any question about Bose with negative answers. They always fight any negative print, going as far as suing Consumer Reports.
As far as JBL, they once made pretty good speakers but they are pretty much typical consumer stuff now. If you want really good speakers join a Hi-Fi discussion forum and ask questions there. Personally I build my own speakers and always have - 27+ years - so I don't keep track of what is on the finished speaker market.
I don't know your price range either. Well Mark, I'll take you word that you aren't a shill. It just struck my memory that I'd seen that exact same answer before on a similar question.
Personally I have never bought a new pair of speakers, mostly because I was a dirt poor music student and instead learned everything I could so I could build them. I had admired Bose 901s but could never afford them. One day a friend had me repair a pair of Bose speakers (not 901s) and was quite frankly horrified when I opened them up and found the cheapness of the construction.
The tweeter looked like one that I had taken out of a transistor radio when I was a kid. As I learned more about speaker construction I also discovered the flawed thinking behind the 901. Now I wouldn't take them if they were given to me.
I've built countless sets of speakers and have at least two pairs that are on the same level as something like B&W 802s or Wilson Shasta WP. I could never even begin to afford to buy finished speakers like this but I understand the manufacturers commitment to excellence and the according high price. It's the whole mentality of Bose that burns me up.
I know quality when I see it and it's not there. They are in the business of fooling people and taking as much money as possible from them. One could get a very good set of speakers indeed with the same money spent on an Acoustimass system - a set of Paradigms or PSBs - and have true audiophile speakers instead of distortion boxes.
Sorry if I offended anyone but the truth is the truth and sometimes it offends people.
Simple, stay away from Bose: Fact; every consumer line they offer: Has NO tweeters, and use paper drivers only: no matter high or low Bose models: all use no tweeters, and all drivers are paper. Fact: yes, because of the above fact, they need to use an aggressive Dsp (digital signal processing) to "correct" their lack of tweeters and lack of size in those 2"woofers (too small to be good midwoofers, too insufficient to be tweeters)... And also Bose lacks true bass: their acoustimass "bass module" -all have only 5.5" woofers: most subwoofers ib other audio equipment uses larger:8"-to-12" subs. So in some of Bose- higher models: they use up to 3 of these 5.5"woofers in a bandpass (ldf-chipboard) cabinet... Common, three small woofers?
Y not just go with ample sized ones? Cost? Size?
Efficiency? Who knows-all I guess. This agressive dsp also has many drawbacks... The worst one is that it produces FATIGUING sound: especially for music!
: music is suppose to be relaxing: not hurting! Jbl in the other hand; uses tweeters actually, all Midfi/HIFI uses some sort of tweeters - just not bose - cuz they think their marketing and name is immune to the need for tweeters... Has ample sized midwoofers: and ample sized subwoofers in mdf cabinets. JBL also uses paper in some of their speakers: but I assure you, that their Tweeters are not paper... and their they've strayed away from paper midwoofers for a long time now...
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
