We tried both and preferred direct. We don't watch TV 24/7 and there are a few favorite things. Neither of us is a wild sports fan, and we both speak English.
We got tired of getting lost in all the channels the dish gave us, so we switched to direct and got a bundled deal which included our internet service.
I have had both, and I like Dish Network better First off, it’s very confusing to compare the two side by side, and that’s by design. When you look for comparisons, what you’ll find is the same generalities at just about every site. They all say bottom line, you can’t go wrong with either, they both are rated high as possible in JD Power and other rankings...currently Dish is #1 and DirectV is #2, but that changes from year to year, and they both have between 13 and 16 million subscribers...Dish has a few more.
Dish partners with Sirius for its music channels and DirectV offers XM (though if you realy like the audio only channels, Dish also offers it’s own CD quality channels in addition to the Sirius channels). You’ll also find a lot of talk about how if you want general programming it's Dish, if you wants sports it's DirectV. However, in looking at the lineup, it really seems like that's pretty much only if you want to pay the extra for the premium sports packages like NFL Sunday Ticket.
If you look at the lineups you get with the various packages, it seems to me that there are actually more sports channels with your regular programming with Dish. But from a subscriber perspective, that only tells part of the story. Here are some things I like about Dish better than DirectV.
- With DirectV, you had to have a box for each room, and you would pay 5 or 6 bucks for each box beyond the first one. With Dish, you get one box that controls two rooms, or two boxes to control up to four rooms. There is only an additional charge if you have a DVR box, but the DVR is built into the box, so instead of paying 5 bucks for each box and 5 bucks for each DVR, you're paying 6 bucks for each DVR, but two 100 hour DVRs would cover 4 rooms, you'd need 4 DVRs to have that access in four rooms with DirectV.
I have two rooms, so from my perspective I pick my programming package, and I pay 6 extra bucks a month for the DVR, and I believe 5 bucks extra for local channels, and as I understand it, DirectV doesn't charge for local channels...but their programming packages are 2 or 3 bucks more (at least) when comparing apples to apples. So, in most cases, Dish coms out to dcost less, though depending on your number of TVs, DVRs and the package you pick, it could be less for DirectV. I would need to offer up about 300 different scenarios to show you all the possibilities and compare them, and that's just impossible to do here, but I know that in any permutation that I would pick, Dish is a few bucks cheaper.
- With Dish, you get all the Encore stations in the highest level of programming (America's Top 250)...on DirectV, you have to buy Starz (at $12 for the first premium channel, then 11, 10, 9 and 8 if you get 2, 3, 4 or 5). I think the main advantage with DirectV, where they make up the price difference is if you spend like over $100 a month and get their top of the line packages (Dish is still less here), and add HD programming packages...this is the one weak area. Dish has a LOT more HD channels, but they charge $20 a month instead of $10, and a lot of the channels aren't the "big name" channels (though some are).
- Dish has a ton of educational channels that DirectV doesn't. It has a lot of EVERY type of channel that DirectV doesn't have in fact...though DirectV does have a few channels that Dish doesn't, in terms of number of channels, overall selection, etc., Dish is better. Theonly things I really missed about DirectV moving to Dish were 3....PBS Kids....my son liked a lot of the shows on this channel when he was younger, but when he was older, we went to Dish even though we'd lose this, two was these monthly live concerts they'd show for free, and three was that the Sundance channel came with the higher level package (the one without the premium channels), whereas you have to have a premium channel to get it on Dish.
But Dish has a lot I like, in particular, they have one channel called IMF (the International Music Feed) which is a 24 hour international music video channel...it's a music TV channel that STILL SHOWS VIDEOS. If you were a fan of MTV when they actually played videos, you will LOVE this channel. Another big thing is Encore being included in your highest level package (the one without the premium channels) at no extra charge, so it's like having a movie channel package without paying extra for it.
- Dish has ALWAYS had more programming packages than DirectV, it used to have 5 packages vs. Direct's 4, now it has 6, so you can find something inbetween. I like the highest level standard pacakge (and it's still cheaper than the corresponding one from DirectV and has more channels that I watch. Having one box that controls two TVs is great as well, it saves room and I don't have to have a remote extender (or pay an extra box fee).
I can watch my DVR programs from either room, I can watch one channel while recording another. There are also some interactive portions to Dish...you can play certain games, even sing Karoke. Bottom line, almost everyone is happy with the reception, almost everyone is happy with the customer service, and the programming and pricing on both systems, and both are way better than cable.
Yes, there are people who've had problem with one and not the other, and there are people who have specific reasons they like DirectV over Dish, but here's what I'd suggest. Go to both of their websites... www.directv.com and www.dishnetwork.com, take them one at a time. Build your programming package...decide which of the packages you'd want based on the channel lineups.
So you have your package built for DirectV, and have your package built on Dish...I'm betting you'll find Dish to be cheaper unless you have an HD set and/or want to subscribe to a particular sports pack that Dish doesn't have. But this is a case where you can pick based on price, because quality is going to be the same with either one. Though you can see if there is a money back guarantee just in case so you don't get stuck when you sign up for a one or two year agreement.
THEY ARE THE same COMPANY SO IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER! They both have their good points & bad points. But I have to tell you I wrote a complaint letter to the CEO of dish..and I got a response!
.
DISH Network is the better value. Directv has a slight edge in some sports packages, but not by much. Their NFL Sunday Ticket will probably not happen this year.
DISH packages start at only $24.99/month and include free installation in up to 6 rooms. All DISH Network packages include free Showtime for 3 months as well. HD Free For Life and the ability to lock in your price until 2013 make DISH even sweeter if you are looking to save on pay TV.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
