Similar questions: gas water heater electric.
I used to live in an apartment with an electric water heater and it worked just fine. The new house I live in has a gas water heater and it heats water more quickly but that is the only significant difference I can find. Also, I've never noticed the gas water heater to create a significant rise in our monthly gas bills even when we've had times of high hot water usage in the household.
The best kind is a Bosch AquaStar "on demand" tankless gas hot water heater. About 6 years ago, I switched out my electric tank type hot water heater for a Bosch AquaStar tankless "on demand" gas hot water heater. I love it!
This type of heater hangs on the wall, (so no floor "footprint" needed), heats water only when needed, (so saves money), and never runs out of hot water (no more frustrated shower takers in a family of 6). Here is the "blurb" from the front of the internet link I have provided for you at the bottom of this page. "Bosch tankless water heaters have quickly become the choice for families demanding endless hot water.
With an average life expectancy of more than 20 years, energy savings of up to 50%, and an endless supply of hot water, your family will thank you for years to come. "These hot water heaters cost more than the traditional tank type to buy and install, but they save money in the long run. The traditional tank types heat all the water in the tank whether you need it or not, wasting energy (and energy costs) in the process.(If you are a small family, or a family that uses more hot water on certain days of the week than others, then why heat the whole tank full of water every day when you don't need it?
) Also, the tank types require more maintenance than the tankless, and don't last as many years before they need to be replaced. Overall, I'm convinced that I have saved money with my tankless system. Here are some more links that might be useful if you are interested in investigating this type of tank.
