I don't know Science Illustrated. I find Popular Science to be more "popular" than "science". Scientific American is highly recommended.
I actually recommend even more highly Science News, which is the one most focused on actual science and less about high-tech speculation and other "frontiers of science" stuff. And since it's bi-weekly it's much closer to current events than Scientific American. (They used to be weekly, which was better, but they moved slightly towards the Scientific American direction.) .
I go with New Scientist and The Economist if you want straight. I used to like Scientific American, but it got too "cute. "I don't know Science News.

Pop Sci has become entirely too gadget and DIY oriented.
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
