According to the American Heritage Dictionary, a peninsula is, “A piece of land that projects into a body of water and is connected with the mainland by an isthmus. €? With a coastline of nearly 1,350 miles, the longest coastline in the contiguous United States, the state of Florida is mostly peninsula.
The state is sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, and attached to the United States mainland by an isthmus border with Georgia and Alabama. Although Alaska, with a coastline longer than all other states combined, is also a notable peninsula state, it is attached to Canada by a much larger isthmus. However, peninsula is not unit of measurement.
So, a piece of land is either a peninsula or not a peninsula, and the degree to which it is or is not a peninsula can not change.
