There seem to be several. One is JustGive. Org, which, with 1.5 million local charities to choose from, seems great.
The recipient can choose where to donate the money. Tisbest seems to have taken a more active role and chosen 200 charities to pick from, and the recipient chooses. Heifer is a place where you can donate things for food production (and therefore, help the farmer out, too).
And Google is always helpful; I found these sites googling "charity donate as gift. " CNN also has a list of information and tips about giving to charity instead of giving a regular gift.
Pretty much any non-profit will allow you to make a donation as a gift in someone else's name. Usually a card is sent acknowledging the gift. Causecast is co-located with Mahalo and is one stop site for supporting multiple charities.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
