Alright first of all Syamantak I don't think the best ODI innings on losing cause is 194* by Charles. When it comes to great innings the ones being score during a chase should be considered as greater than the innings occurred while batting first. Coventry scored 194* batting first.
Moreover it came against minnow Bangladeshi bowlers. So no its not the best. And none of the inning mentioned by other answerers are the best either.
TJ, Mahela's hundred came in batting first. Ponting's 164 was also came in batting first. Sachin's 175 was SUPERB!
No doubt about that. But there is one innings which outsmarts that. Its Michael Bevan scoring 185 not out of 132 balls against Asia XI...! http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/s... In 2000 there was an ODI match between Asia XI and ROW XI (rest of the world).
In Dhaka. Unfortunately this match wasn't counted by ICC as an international ODI. They should have IMO.
Asia Xi batted first and scored 320 in their 50 overs with Sachin top scoring with 80. In reply ROW XI struggled right from the start falling way behind the required rate. But there was one guy who stood tall and played an outrageous and extra ordinary inning and that was Mr. not out Michael Bevan!
He hammered all Asia's best bowlers Murali, Vass, Akram and Kumble all over the park. How great was that? A non subcontinent batsman hammering the subcontinent's best bowlers who were playing for the same side in sub continent conditions.
That was absolutely indescribable! I was lucky to witness it on TV. Oh what an innings he played when the rest failed.
Bevan brought the match to the final over where ROW needed 21 to win of it. And Bevan kept on pounding until the equation changed to 6 needed of last ball. Then he hammered it!
One bounce passing the boundary line for four and Asia XI clinched one run win! But Bevan personified himself as the most talked and praised player by completely out performing every one including the winning team! Bevan made 185 not out of 132 balls with 19 boundaries and 5 massive sixes!
Its not his fault that his team lost bcz he gave 300% effort from his side! Oh that was just INCREDIBLE! So no two words about that this is the BEST ODI INNINGS PLAYED BY A BATSMAN ON LOSING CAUSE!
Hell even it can be considered as one of the greatest ever ODI innings if not the greatest of them all!
Sachin Tendulkar's 175 Vs Australia at Hyderabad. I rate this above Coventry's 194* because Sachin played in second innings, with tremendous pressure on.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
