In the federal court system, the US Courts of Appeals Circuit Courts are usually the intermediate appellate step between the US District Courts (trial courts) and the US Supreme Court. Under certain circumstances, cases can be appealed directly from District Court to the Supreme Court The US Supreme Court is the final court of appeal for cases from the US Courts of Appeals Circuit Courts. The justices of the Supreme Court have discretion over which cases they review; only 1-2% of the 10,000 or more petitions for writ of certiorari are granted each year.
If the Supreme Court denies an appeal, then the decision of the previous appellate becomes the final judgment.
