Who follows buddhism philosophy/religion? Why? Why not? What do you particularly like about it?

Any other details you would like to share. I am starting to look into buddhism myself. Asked by missb524 40 months ago Similar questions: buddhism philosophy religion Society > Religion & Spirituality.

I do. There are many types of Buddhism, and there is plenty of debate whether it is a religion per se or a philosophy. Either way, it provides a useful pointer for me when I try to describe my sense of how things work.

I started out reviewing all kinds of faiths in my teens. This went on for decades, literally, until I found something that worked for me. For me, it was not so much adopting a set of beliefs as it was finding a philosophy out there which matched my own personal one.So it was rather like falling in love.

One thing I like about Buddhism, which is common to all branches, is that no one ever tells you that you have to believe this or that. The Buddha mself said that you have to test these things out for yourself, and if they are true to you, then use them. If not, chuck them.

Another thing I like is the focus on compassion, and the recognition that everyone bears relation to everyone else. I think things could be more peaceful if we could all hold this thought more regularly. I think Buddhism's biggest contribution here in the west is going to be the slowing down and calming the mind.

Meditation is a very beneficial practice; regardless of what I choose to meditate about, the discipline is good for my mind. I like the idea that I am resonsible for my own happiness, and that much of my happiness depends not upon what happens to me, but what I think about it.
