Elvis said the true king of rock and roll was little richard don't forget jerry lee lewis, gene vincent, eddie cochran. Who else? Lets see, so many....

Ask 1000 people, you'll get 1000 different answers - very subjective question So, as a result, all I can do is offer up the ones that I feel should be 2-5 and that’s as far as I’m going to go. And, unless you’re really into music of that early era, you may not recognize some of the names. For starters, what Elvis did initially while he was with Sun Records wasn’t really what we think of as rock and roll - it was rockabilly which was a combination of Southern gospel, blues, and country all fused together into a new sound which became known as rock and roll.As a result, that opens the doors for some very interesting possibilities as to who could be numbers 2-5 on such a list.

All of the following would certainly be contenders for that coveted second spot - not necessarily based upon their record sales, but because of the influence they had on other artists: these would include names such as Jack Scott, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Burnette and Buddy Holly. Due to his tragic death at such a young age, Holly should probably get the nod for the number two spot on the list based upon the fact he showed many young people what could be done with an electric guitar - remember, for many years Elvis only used an acoustic guitar. Blending country with the new sound coming out of Memphis, Holly’s unique voice was just perfect for the period and as a result, his influence on others cannot be denied.

Now, we’re getting into the tricky territory - who would be number 3? My vote would go to Rick(y) Nelson, who while he achieved fame more as a teenaged idol during those years, owed heavily to the Memphis Sun/rockabilly sound which he sadly wasn’t able to really explore and bring to the forefront of his stage act until the 1960’s when his teen idol days were a thing of the past. He is highly underrated as a musical artist and if one gives a listen to his later recordings, you can see that he should also be listed in the top 5 of early influences.

Number 4 should go probably to Chuck Berry or Little Richard, but I’m giving my vote to Bo Diddley whose throbbing guitar beat punctuated every tune he did. No gimmicks for Bo such as pompadour hair like Little Richard or duckwalking like Chuck Berry - just good, solid, hard, driving rhythms that tell you that you’re not going to be able to sit still while he’s playing. And, the English adored him - he was a tremendous influence on acts such as the Animals.

No doubt about it, he could rock! Number 5 is Bob Dylan. He doesn’t rate higher on the list because he never really started rockin’ until the mid-’60’s when he put down his acoustic guitar and went electric much to the consternation of those at the Newport Folk Festival.

The number of people influenced by Bob Dylan is perhaps even larger than those who were influenced by Elvis - everyone from the Beatles (listen to Rubber Soul and you’ll see) to Tom Petty and other artists. Others I’m sure will disagree, but those are my choices based upon 50 years of listening to rock and roll from its inception. Sources: My life/My opinions and I'm stickin' to them!

2 is Jerry Lee Lewis. After that the field starts getting crowded. Certainly, among your suggestions, Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly are notable..

I was 14 years old when Elvis sang his first big hit and that was "Heartbreak Hotel". He soon followed that hit with "Don't Be Cruel" ; "Hound Dog" "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" and many others. Popular music was never the same after that.

There were many imitators after Elvis, but none could come close to the magnetism and charisma of Elvis! He is number one - the Entertainer of the Century! I'm looking for a good book on the pre-history of rock and roll music (see details).

If Elvis Was The King Of Rock And Roll......

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
