According to most fashion enthusiasts, the most influential fashion designer in history would be Coco Chanel. As she is the sole person in the fashion industry to be on the Most Important People of the Century list, her contributions were many, but it was her menswear inspired couture that has cemented her place in fashion history. Before Coco Chanel, there were women’s trousers, but Chanel made them a fashion staple, tailoring them to the woman’s figure and showing that a woman wearing trousers could still be fashionable and feminine and at the same time be comfortable.
Chanel was the first designer to use the fabric jersey, which was predominantly a fabric used for men’s undergarments, to create women’s fashions that fit loose and comfortably. Besides all of her contributions to the fashion world, Coco Chanel has been a mentor for women everywhere as she lived her life on her own terms and crossed gender barriers to create the most famous fashion house in history.
