The top athletes Catriona Le May Doan(speed skating), Steve Nash(basketball), Nancy Greene(ski) and Wayne Gretzky (hockey) took their position around the cauldron inside the stadium Due to a malfunction, the arm next to Le May Doan didn't raise and the other athletes lit three arms. After this, Gretzky was driven toward an outside cauldron that he lit. The inside cauldron was extinguished later because the stadium did not withstand the heat.
