The Vikings certainly got to North America first The Vikings went to Newfoundland, without a doubt. The settlement at L'anse aux Meadows is well-documented to have been reached in 1000 AD. But they didn't publicize the information very widely, and their settlement died out, along with the settlement in Greenland.(The idea that they reached Minnesota is a hoax.

) And really, the native Americans have been here since at least 12,000 years ago, and stayed. So they were here a lot longer than anybody else.It sort of depends on what question you want to ask. Who was here first?

If it is maize, it's stylized, or drawn by somebody who had heard about it but not seen it.It could just be a pretty design. The best book I have read on the subject is Jared Diamond's Collapse. It examines why the Vikings were in North America but didn't stay, and cites environmental reasons. It also examines other early cultural travels to the Western Hemisphere.

Cypriots, Minoans or Other Mediterranean Cultures as far back as 2470 B.C. There are extensive, ancient copper mines in the Lake Superior/UP Michigan area, especially the Keweenaw Peninsula. Archeological evidence points to mining over a long period beginning more than 1000 years before Christ, with most of the metal apparently exported. Even with questions about carbon dating, this is still far more ancient than any other candidates.

Native Americans Native Americans migrated from the Eurasia continent something like 12,000 years before Columbus tried and failed to prove the world was round. They walked from Asia across what is now the Berring Straight (ie, betwen Asia and Alaska) and settled in various regions of the two new continents. Millenia later, the Vikings set forth in the 900s, still 500+ years before Columbus.

They came, they saw, ... they left. Many historians theorize that several other oceangoers from Europe found their way to the Western Hemosphere between the Vikings and Columbus, but did not leave significant lasting effects (see second source below) Finally, in 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue and though he landed in India. To say that he "discovered" America is an absurdity.

What he did do was bring back tales of his voyage that made other Europeans realize this continent existed. That is, he brought knowledge that had been previously learned to the masses. It was his voyages that led to the colonization of the Western Hemisphere.

Vikings Vikings. They got to North America about 400-500 years before Columbus. Possibly some other early European ships got to America before that but they wouldn’t make any serious impact.

You mentioned that the Kensington Runestone was a hoax, and then you linked to an article to two people who claim they made up an inscription on a seperate boulder some distance away (they supposedly "confessed" in 2001). However, just because they marked up a boulder a quarter of a mile away from the runestone does not mean the runestone is a fake. You're making a fallacy by claiming that there's a direct correlation between the boulder being fake and the runestone's veracity (the runestone has a hooked x which was used in a graveyard of Knights Templar in southern Scotland.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
