Not only did he come to the house, but when he got there, he didn't ring the door bell (Yes we had them then) or knock. He just walked right in like he was part of the family. I can remember him coming in to the house, and he wouldn't even sat Doctor.
First thing I remember him saying was "Where is he"? He would exam me, give me some terrible tasting medicine and would be on his way.By the way we didn't lock our doors, and didn't take the keys out of the car. People were more honest.
I read on Comcast news last week were in New York there is a group of Doctors that again are coming to your home if you are sick and want them to come. They charge now $300.00 to $600.00 for a house call. Would you be willing to pay this fee.
Little steep I think, and I know the Insurance isn't going to pay for it. Back when MOM called the Doctor to come to the house, I think he charged his regular price he had at the office and a extra $3.00 for the house call. I do remember this! It was back in the late 1950's when the polio epidemic was rampant. My grandmother was so certain that my brother had it.
Turned out to be the measles. This doc used to drive 30 miles down the road every year when my mom got strep throat to give her a shot of penicillin. There was one in my hometown in NY that started doing that again, but thank goodness, that practice was stopped in its tracks because he was a little "off the wall".
But I remember good old Dr. Quinn, who looked like Raymond Massey in the old Dr. Kildare movies. What a good question this was! .
Delvet. I remember the same things you brought up in your question. I thought those days were long gone, but my husband's cardiologist proved me wrong.
Long story short, my husband had a severe heart attack followed by quintuple bypass surgery in February. After he was back at home and recovering we got a call from his doctor's assistant asking if the doc come stop by to visit. Three hours later he was sitting with us on our deck discussing my husband's recovery, diet, exercise, and physical symptoms.
He stayed over an hour. We expected a large charge to appear on his Medicare EOB, but it never came. It's significant to add that our home is a two hour drive from the Dr.'s office.
We were amazed by the entire event and know that my husband will keep this doctor as long as we live in this city. Sources: personal experience .
Sure do remember. I sure do remember that! When my children were little and they would get sick with a temperature I would call the doctor and he would come to my Brooklyn New York apartment.
Now these two "children" are 37 and 43 and when their children get sick they are told to bundle them up and bring them to the office. When I tell them the doctor used to come to them they look at me like I have two heads. When my grandchildren go to the doctor for "well checkups" they usually get sick the following week due to all the germs in the waiting room.

Yes, wonderful Yes, that seemed wonderful. But it was a big waste of time and resources. The reason he came was that most people did not have cars and taknig a sick kid on a long streetcar ride was less than a thrilling idea.
Even when the doctor arrived, he could not do much more than check the kid's temperature. No X-rays, no lab tests. And his little black bag could hold every known effective drug, like aspirin and morphine and not much else.
If he did give a shot, it was with a big chrome and glass syringe, needle used up to 100 times and only dipped for a second in alcohol. Ah yes, those were the days. Doctors cost about $100 an hour.
I don't think you want to be paying an extra $100 for travel time.
Yup, I remember that..... Also remember getting a needle shoved in my ass.... didn't much care for that part of the visit. But you're right; times have changed. We didn't have to worry about walking down the street and getting gunned down by a drive by shooting either.
Ah, the good old days.... oh, and I used to take the keys out of my car so my sisters wouldn't take it out after I went to bed (my car).
