Zachary Taylor married Margaret "Peggy" Mackall Smith on June 21, 1810 at the home of the bride's sister near Louisville, KY. Mrs. Taylor was born on September 21, 1788 in Calvert County, MD and died August 14, 1852 in Pascagoula, MS They had one son and five daughters. Son Richard was a General in the Confederate Army.

Daughter Sarah Knox Taylor was the wife of Jefferson Davis, but died from malaria shortly after she wed.
