Yesterday, the senior quarterback became the seventh Buckeye to win the Heisman Trophy, college football's highest individual honor. He's led Ohio State to an undefeated season and a berth in the national championship game.

Smith received 801 first-place votes and 2,540 points to beat Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, who had 45 first- place votes and 878 points, and Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, who had 13 first-place votes and 782 points, in voting by a nationwide media panel and former Heisman winners. Points are awarded on a 3-2-1 basis and Smith's 1,662-point victory was the second-largest ever, trailing only to a 1,750- point win by Southern California's O.J.Simpson in 1968. ``It won't change me as a player,'' said Smith in an interview with ESPN after the Heisman ceremony in New York.

``If anything, it will strengthen me and make my thirst and my hunger even more strong. ''West Virginia running back Steve Slaton was fourth, followed by Michigan running back Mike Hart and Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan.As a freshman, Smith touched the ball eight times, all on runs or kick returns after being recruited for his ``overall athletic ability,'' according to the university media guide. Smith started for the first time during his sophomore year, replacing a player who injured his shoulder, and took the role for good the following year.

''Smith, a communications major, entered Ohio State after the school won its first national championship in 34 years. He sat out 2002 as a redshirt, then played in 10 games in 2003, when he had 83 yards in five kickoff returns and ran three times for 14 yards in 10 games.

After he moved into the starting role for the first time in the seventh game of the following year, the team went 4-1 with him as quarterback. He finished with 896 yards passing with six touchdowns and three interceptions and 339 rushing yards with a score. Coach Jim Tressel then suspended him for Ohio State's Alamo Bowl win over Oklahoma State and the next year's opener for taking $500 from a Buckeyes' booster, a violation of National Collegiate Athletic Association rules.

`Extraordinary Competitor'He returned from suspension to start 10 games in 2005 as Ohio State finished 10-2, including a seven-game winning streak to end the season. Smith threw for a career-high 300 yards in a win over Michigan, then had 342 passing yards in a victory over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. ``Troy Smith is an extraordinary competitor,'' Tressel said in an interview with ESPN.
