I have to part company with all the economic gurus who have answered . Social Security is viewed as a liability because THEY SPENT THE MONEY ON WARS . Kinda like going to the bank and finding out your wife has take all the money out .
( true story ) They want to end S.S. because they can the then get out from under the bill coming due . If they " privatized " the program we would go back to millions of old people too poor to live . They don't have the stones enough to do a very simple fix , raise the income caps temporarily to account for the large number baby boomers .
Never mind the same large numbers are the ones who PAID INTO THE SYSTEM and are responsible for the 3 trillion that is in there . It is a ploy to get our money . Period .
To that crowd " privatize " means give us your money and " socialize " means OH WAIT you some back! If it weren't for S.S. payroll taxes being collected where would they get the money to run the government? Idiots .
To that one moron that thinks we collect more than we paid in I have two facts : 1. Millions die and never collect a dime . 2.
I started paying into S.S. at age 16 and if I retire at 62 with the lower benefit rate I would have to live to be 117 to get my money back . Pick up a pencil igit . The cons HATE the idea that they don't control OUR money and have used all means of propaganda and lies to get it .
A 2.5 trillion dollar bonanza . S.S. actually helps those who have lost a wage earner ( I guess they would prefer they just live in a dumpster somewhere ) and it kills them to think that they can't use it for billionaire bonuses . In conclusion the doubters should remember IT IS OUR MONEY , NOT YOURS .
Raise the income caps and have a nice day . S.S. is a great employer matched savings plan and for those who like the masses live month to month because of mortgage , health care costs , and kids college tuition it will be great to know it's there when I retire . It won't buy a new Cessna but it will pay the taxes , food , and the electric bill so I won't have to work till the day I die .
The SS program is not sustainable in the current form. The surplus money was put in the general fund and it was spent on wars and tax cuts. When SS does not collect enough money to pay for benefits, the general fund must make up the difference (it felt good to take the surplus in general fund) and that is to be done by increasing taxes on top 1% or top 0.5% of the population.
They got the bulk of the benefits of the tax cut and top 1% own 40% of the wealth in this country. So the justifiable answer is to increase taxes on the people who benefited when SS was producing surplus and it was put in general funds of the US budget.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
