Why are flags flown at half mast?

Flags are flown at half-staff as a sign of respect and remembrance during a time of immediate mourning or annual remembrance ceremony. Only the President of the United States or the Governor of a State has the authority to issue a flag lowering proclamation. Oftentimes, when a police officer, fire fighter or other public servant is killed in the line of duty or has simply passed away, a city official, Fire Chief or Chief of Police might feel inclined to ask the community to lower flags in honor of the deceased.

While this request is well-intentioned, this person has no authority to make this request. Most flag lowering occasions mark a significant tragic event in our nations history such as Pearl Harbor Day, 9/11 (Patriot Day), Memorial Day, or the passing of a current or former President of the United States, Vice President or similar dignitary. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
