Why are my brugmansia leaves small and turning yellow?...even though the plant still flowers. This is the mother plant. My new plants grown from cuttings produce much larger leaves.

Great help from GardenStew.com I found some advice for you on GardenStew.com. You can access it here:I've also cut and pasted the most pertinent content here:"Brugmansia leaves do yellow and mottle regularly Eileen. Here are a few things for Bobbieray to try.
Any good quality compost will do to pot up Brugs but ensure they have good drainage, although they need lots of watering they don't like their roots in water. They are very greedy plants I feed mine with miracle grow 2-3 times a week in the summer. Lots of people actually grow them as a standard if the climate allows but remember that they don't like cold weather and are not frost hardy.
He will need to check for red spider mite , this is another cause of leaf yellowing. They are very difficult to spot, they look like pepper dust on the underneath of the leaves. Spray the leaves with a fine spray of water and look for very fine spiders webs on the ends of the branches.
I use the Ultimate Bug Killer with Pravado to control mine or you can get nematodes if he is an organic gardener like you. He will need to spray about every 7 days for a couple of weeks to eradicate this pest, it's best done at night when the leaves are standing up so the spray gets onto the underside of the leaf (also best time to feed with miracle grow) but it's worth it. Hope this helps Bobbieray and tell him good luck from me.

It's sounds like this is normal Brug leaves are still yellow. Clip this post email this post what is this? See most clipped and recent clippings Posted by MollyZone5 (My Page) on Thu, Aug 4, 05 at 10:11I posted a while back about bottom leaves turning yellow and falling off, which I was told could be normal.
Now as these brugs have grown they continue to lose leaves. These are in large pails, have been watered well, fertilized, get lots of sun,and no bug problems. These brugs look more like palm trees.
I pulled one out of the pail and there are thick roots all around the outside of the root ball. Could it be root bound? Would that cause the leaves to yellow and drop.
I also noticed one is sending up new little shoots from the soil. These have not bloomed and are showing no signs of wanting to. Please, any suggestions, these things are driving me nuts.

See most clipped and recent clippings Posted by Bonbon_N_KS 5b (My Page) on Thu, Aug 4, 05 at 12:57It sounds pretty normal to me.. They will put out new leaves where the old leaves fall off.
How big are the "pails"? How long have they been potted up in the pails? The shoots are like baby brugs, they probably won't have blooms this year, unless they've been growing most of the season.
You could leave them to grow or cut them off this fall for cutting trades. You haven't noticed any white flies, if I remember correctly white flies can make leaves turn yellow and fall. Are there little brown spots on the leaves before they turn yellow?

See most clipped and recent clippings Posted by MollyZone5 (My Page) on Thu, Aug 4, 05 at 13:41They are in 5 gallon pails and were potted up into these this spring.
I have not noticed any spots on the leaves, and the upper new leaves are green and look great. The shoots coming from the soil are little brug shoots, which seem to keep their leaves and they do not yellow. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE: Brug leaves are still yellow.
Clip this post email this post what is this? See most clipped and recent clippings Posted by Wildcat_IN_Z5 z5b IN (My Page) on Thu, Aug 4, 05 at 14:51 that is normal to drop lower leaves, especially in pots. Also, they will drop leaves as the trunk becomes more woody as well.
Truely, there is no such thing as a big enough pot for a brug...the bigger the pot, the more they will grow...then they need a bigger pot, etc. LOL! And yes, it sounds rootbound. Patience will be the key to blooms.
Being that you are in Zone 5 as I am, I think you should see blooms at the end of this month. Wildcat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE: Brug leaves are still yellow. Clip this post email this post what is this?
See most clipped and recent clippings Posted by GardenGranma 6b/7a MD (My Page) on Thu, Aug 4, 05 at 15:28Mine do the same, and they are in Aug 4, 05 whiskey barrels. I water everyday, I fertilize twice weekly, and I am beginning to think that the heat has something to do with it as well. Last Spring, I have stuck a number of cuttings around the bottom, that fills in very nicely and will give me or someone more plants at some point.

Come fall and cooler weather, and it will grow like a weed, and put out blooms like crazy. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE: Brug leaves are still yellow. Clip this post email this post what is this?
See most clipped and recent clippings Posted by MollyZone5 (My Page) on Fri, Aug 5, 05 at 8:34Thanks everyone. I hate to be a horses butt about this, but it is my first full year with these plants and I think maybe I worry too much about them. I try to do all the right things for them and then I see them looking like this and I think they are mad at me for something.
Now I will just be patient and see what they do. I do think next year that I might try planting them in the ground. So watch out next year for another round of my questions.

It's okay, you're not a HB :). I do think you need bigger pots. I have some of mine in those BIG 25?
Gal tubs with big cord handles (around $5 or $6), just drill some holes in the bottom for drainage. They will get and retain more water in the bigger pots. Just my $.02.
Enjoy and check out the Brugmansia faqs, lots of information on different ways to grow the beauties. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE: Brug leaves are still yellow. Clip this post email this post what is this?
See most clipped and recent clippings Posted by Marie_zone5 KC MO (My Page) on Mon, Aug 4, 05 at 22:22Molly, I'm with you. This is my first brugmansia also. It is a Jean?
Don't remember the rest of it right now. Anyway, it more like a palm tree than a brug. It lost all its leaves and is growing a small new batch.
Has a cute little topnot on it. There is one pretty tall secondary stalk growing about 2 feet. I guess I will make a cutting with it.
The main plant is in a pot about 18" across and 24" deep. I think it just got too hot and then we had wind. I am waiting for next year.
Assume there will be nothing spectacular this year. It is easier that way. Marie -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE: Brug leaves are still yellow.

Is it Jean Pasco? I'm finding in Kansas to get earlier than September blooms, I have to keep them barely alive in winter. I do this by stripping the leaves (in the fall before bringing them in), trimming a bit of top growth off and put them in the basement in front of a small window and watering very sparingly till spring.
I had blooms on my versi in June this year! I was ready to say to heck with Brugs, I pamper and feed and water all summer only to get blooms when it is time to bring them inside in the fall. The versi is about to have a HUGE flush this time, I just love the evening smell.
The pic is in June, I've been getting flowers, just not heavy flushes like it's about to give me now in August. Sources: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/brug/msg0810112010048.html .
It Is Quite Normal For Brugmansia To Turn Yellow, Remain Small, And the Leaves May Even Fall Off It is actually quite normal and common for the Brugmansia to lose leaves, turn yellow or molt. Do not worry about this for new leaves will grow in its place, if the leaves fall out. Sources: forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/brug/ms... .
1 I have 6 brugmansias in pots. They all grew to a certain size (about 1.5 feet) and now don't appear to be growing anymore. Why?
Furthermore, as others have complained about, the leaves are rather yellow looking. I was really hoping to see a bloom or two! It doesn't appear as though I will see anything this year, other than yellow leaves.
If anyone knows why my Brugs have stopped growing, I'd sure like to know. Thanks .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
