Not at all, its more a reaction to TV images spiced with a reaction against or government's xenophobic policies.
I forget the term but this has been proven scientifically. The study was undertaken in regards to the attention that the killing of Jill Meagher received compared to the Asian women killed in the Botanical Gardens later by a nutter. It was proven that if you want to kill anyone don't kill single white middle class women.
The irony here was that Jill Meagher's killer had a long history of murders but no one cared as the victims were junkie prostitutes. Had the police paid attention here JM would most likely be alive. The morale is that all lives are equal and if you prioritise because of a picture in the paper you are by default condemning some.
The same principle applies to suicide prevention. A finite amount of dollars and the choice between prevention as programs/education etc and the barrier on the bridge. Experts agree that programs/education are much more effective however a child is thrown off a bridge and stooges immediately demand resources be thrown at building a barrier.
There are always choices to make and everyone cannot be saved.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
