In the late 1940's Ernest Hemingway suffered car accidents, depression, obesity, and diabetes. Then he experienced two plane crashes resulting in a severe head concussion, partial loss of vision and hearing, paralysis of the spine, a ruptured spleen, liver, and kidney, and first degree burns on his face, arms, and leg. He was being followed and watched openly by the FBI because of his interest in Cuba.
Constant pain, alcoholism, electroconvulsive therapy, and worsening depression led him to suicide at age 59.
