Why did Irish/British pubs close daily for a few afternoon hours and do they still do it anywhere now?

They don't do it any more. They used to all open at 11am and close at 11pm until recently. This was because in 1916, they thought the munitions workers should not be drunk or hungover in industrial areas.

Then the kill-joy element kept the wartime regulations going.

1 To the best of my knowledge, the restrictions on opening hours were a product of wartime legislation (overt reason) reinforced by good old English puritanism and distrust of the working classes (covert reason). The restrictions on opening hours were lifted about a decade ago (give or take a lustrum - my attention to these things isn't good) and pubs can now stay open for as long as they want to ... the jury is still out on whether this was a Good Thing. But there are many places where you can cheerfully imbibe the whole 24 hours should the mood take you ... Hope that helps.

3 It may have, simply, been for the staff to have lunch during the slack business hours of the mid-afternoon. All the glass of pubs had to be frosted as well, like loo windows, in case people were seen drinking. Thank God for the EU!

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
