The Treaty of Versailles is one of the most well discussed treaties of this century since it is considered to be one of the big catalysts for WW2. The fact that Germany had to take all the blame is well noted, however, they were not alone in provoking WW1, but they did step on some toes. The Pre-WW situation is important to keep in mind since that is where some of the main aims for the treaty come from.
Lets start with Britain. GB has always been known for adhering to the "splendid isolation" i.e. Not taking much interest in the continental european affairs and rather promote its immense empire.
To do this Britain needed a great fleet, and as a thumb rule took that if its fleet was twice that of the european powers then Britain would be safe. So naturally GB felt threatened when Germany began a naval race with them. The french hardly need mentioning, they had been craving for revenge ever since they lost Alsace-Lorraine to Prussia in 1871, and had always had a constant fear of the Germans, which was not helped by Wilhelm II beginning to expand his army.
These two important points are united under the arrogant Kaiser's "Weltpolitik". He strived not only for a Pan-German movement & expansion he made it clear that he wanted to become the new great world power. So, at the end what Wilhelm II was waiting for was a war to prove his position in Europe and the world, which is why the shooting of Franz-Ferdinand came in handy to give Austria (who was struggling with the Pan-Slavic movement) a blank cheque, i.e.
Fire at will against Serbia and its ally Russia. All these rather heavy offences the Kaiser had committed lead to the Great war, also because he had so drastically abandoned Bismarck's delicate political chess play which had kept Europe at peace for the longest known time. The treaty in the end was very drastic in blaming only Germany and the triple alliance, in-fact, some revisionist historians (ex.
G P Gooch) consider that many nations beside Germany and Austria were interested in war; such as for ex Britain who wanted to reconquer its post as the main naval power, France who wanted to revenge 1871, etc. Versailles was a compromised peace because it was a diktat i.e. It was not negotiable, it was to be accepted in full or war would resume. The various punishments were all related to its political potential in Europe.
Its industrial lands were given away so they couldn't become an important trade nation, they were forbidden to have a substantial army, so that they couldn't impose themselves over other nations and parts of germany were given away/back so as to stop any remainder of the Pan-German movement. So obviously anyone who was afraid of Germany or who lived under its shadow was happy about this arrangement, but the treaty was very unstable because it did use very extreme measures, which as we see ten years later lead to very extreme reactions.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
