Very very simple, the Soviets did exactly what the Americans did in Iraq, A preemptive measure. Against what? Against Afghanistan becoming an ally of the west.
The Soviets did not want another country in their back yard to slap them in the face by joining forces with NATO just like Pakistan. The soviets didn't care who ran the country, as long as it was not gonna have a western military base there. You really have to be critical of the US policy there don't you?
I mean, not only did they try to interfere where their gung-ho noses didn't belong, but they laid the seeds of international terrorism for the next three decades, something that came back to haunt them on 9/11 unfortunately. I must also point out that the reasons behind the 9/11 attacks are not what people like to think they are. I mean, they are not as a result of soviet aggression in Afghanistan.
The manpower may have come from Afghanistan/Pakistan, but the causes came from Saudi. Let me explain. Bin Laden, a citizen of Saudi Arabia was appalled by the presence of US troops in Saudi, which is nothing less than hallowed ground for muslims, this feeling is shared by most in the middle east (a fact is largely ignored by the people in the west) but that isn't all.
US' unconditional support for Israel, largely irritates everyone in the muslim world. And this support for israel during the arab Israel war and the US involvement in Somalia had enraged bin laden to the extent that he was now a radical, that's where afghanistan comes in. Bin laden was cast out of saudi by the royal family, and then found refuge in afghanistan, where he earlier helped the rebels to fight the soviets.
His radical ideas grew amongst the chaos of taliban and al qaeda grew with the huge finances that bin laden had. In afghanistan he managed to lure lots of uneducated youth by the promise of martyrdom to carry out those acts of 9/11.
They were invited to by the socialist Afghan government, which was having a hard time fighting the battery acid throwing Talibans that the US was funding and arming Here's a good article about it; http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?c...
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
