I'm an atheist. I don't "draw first blood" so to speak, but I will defend myself. I get very tired of being told that I can't possibly be a good, moral or kind person because I don't believe in a supernatural power (who, by accounts in the bible does not come off as good, moral or kind, by the way).
I do not want my children to be pressured in school to pray to ANY god. I do not want my rights to be infringed on because I am in a minority group who is (wrongly) perceived as being amoral. For me, that's why I sometimes feel compelled to speak up.
I do try to make my points without being insulting or rude as those are not traits I would value in myself, but it does get frustrating having so many people make so many irresponsible and incorrect assumptions about me as a person, mother or doctor just because I have no belief in God. Just my opinion and viewpoint. And I think that some people get soooooo tired of it that they do become angry or bitter of hearing the same negative stereotypes about themselves over and over and over.
You could at least feign rationality. We attack YOUR BELIEF in god because it affects our lives. For instance - most christians now believe that muslims are their enemy because they have been informed by politicians: who only represent those that profit from waging war (not those who actually fight wars), that muslims are their enemy.
Why aren't priests informing their congregations that muslims are not their enemy? They haven't invaded our countries despite the fact that we are continually invading their's. The third world war: which has already begun (just in case you hadn't noticed), IS GOING TO AFFECT US ALL - not just those that have fallen for a 2,000 year old con trick that is still blighting the lives of millions of people.
We have the right to be angry. We also have a duty to speak out against injustice and tyranny which is condoned and supported by organised religion. What atheists want, essentially, is for blind believers to stop quoting the bible and start thinking for themselves.
Then, perhaps, they will see the world as it is and maybe even want to do something about it.
I think they are attacking the idea of religion - many believe that organized religion is not a good thing because some leaders use it to make their followers do negative things such as killing non-believers.
We only do it as much as you tell us we're wrong! And may god strike me down if I be wrong now!
The question should be why does it bother you that some people don't believe what you believe. There are way too many religions out there for anyone to believe that they hold all the aces.
If you know that the bible and god are a hoax but everytime you turn around it is thrown in your face, sooner or later you will fight back. Religious peole say faith is all they need but to me that is not only absurd but closeminded. You once commented on a question I asked about praying after a disaster and tried to insinuate that because I don't pray I want the people to die.In my life that was the most closeminded, rudest insult about religion I have ever been given.
I don't attack anyone but I see the hypocrisy in believers like yourself and I respond to your attempts at justifying your beliefs. It sucks when others get rude eh.....
I don't want to generalise and annoy either population here. I understand that Atheists and Agnostics seek rationality, where this is a Faith based concept. I do find it interesting that it is expected that Atheists and Agnositics stop arguing beliefs they cannot rationalise, however Christians are still allowed to tell them of their need for God.
I think that you shouldn't take offence at it, and continue to be a good example as is required through Hope that through your life and actions you can show the rationality that you have found - I know its based in Faith -- However you can't tell me that the principles don't help with finding sense. Maybe for Atheists that needs to happen first, I don't know. I find that many Christians however spend alot of time hurting each other.
Not so much focusing on God and the Bible that they deviate from their purpose however if they were all being challenged and aware of their role in the grandscheme of things that maybe they would act in a way that makes sense to those on the outside looking in.
I am an atheist (although I do not like to give me the definitions) and I never attacked God, indeed I try to know the religions. I am fascinated by the various ways of thinking. I am looking for many answers about life, I do not think that one religion can help me, but a broad knowledge and a confrontation with those who believe in God opens my mind.
Have you ever thought that could be the believer to spend energy to attack an atheist? ....Eventually we all are simply human beings with strengths and weaknesses.
Because the only they believe in is that God does not exist. Therefore, on the basis of that belief, they feel compelled to convince those who do believe that it is all smoke and mirrors. If they could actually convince everyone to lose total faith in the existence of God then they could have a sense of accomplishment themselves.WB.
It is really human nature to defend. When Atheists and Agnostics are being made to feel their existence is worthless if they do not believe, they have to defend anyway they can. Believers are made to feel stupid for seemingly blind faith.
Clearly the strong attacks will exist always until we just learn to accept people for what they do or do not believe. PS: I have no stance... to misquote homer simpson"I'm gonna die! Jesus, Allah, Buddha, ET, Atheists and Agnostics, Hubbers, I love you all!
Well, I'm a Christian and I don't understand why there are atheists, but I do respect their own belief. As a matter of fact, I think respect to others belief is the main key to prevent any issues between two different beliefs. If you believe God do not exist then keep it to yourself and not try to make someone feel that they have to be like you.
And that also applies the other way around, which is for Christians trying to make atheists be part of their religion or belief. And by the way, the word "attacking" is not quite good for a statement. I love God, but this is life we just need to keep balance and respect each other.
Because God wants to prove Newton's third law time and again to folks like us.
I'm an atheist and I don't attack God. I think it's a superstition but most have been brainwashed into the idea. My experience is the hard core religious types are the ones doing the attacking and spending their time and energy on attacking everyone.
Terrorism is almost exclusively from religious types, particularly Christians (attacking gays) and Muslims attacking everyone who isn't Muslim. But, I think, it's time for the atheists to speak up and I encourage them to do so. The religious right and the hard core religious types are a serious danger to society and the world in general.
And, I strongly suspect, you are one of those religious types and this is just an excuse to attack atheists. Just saying.
I'm an atheist who used to be a believer, and though not a believer I find the scriptures interesting as works of important literature. Also, from the instant I first stated no longer believing, many religionists have tried to convince me I am wrong so some knowledge of their core-texts is useful. Many atheists know the Bible better than many believers, which is rather sad.
I think the answer here is a much simpler one. Most religions go out recruiting and wanting to safe the masses. Safe them from what exactly?
I think they just freak out because people are constantly pushing his word or the book in their face. Just leave them be and they will leave you be either way, we will always be divided this conversation has gone on for how many thousands of years... Al that happens is people die for a cause that no one can explain there will always be unanswered questions that no one can answer.
I Just Love It When Theist Capitalize Words As If That Would Change The Importance Of Such Words. We don't attack god or the bible directly. We attack your BELIEF in them.
We attack the absurdity of believing in something without any basis.
There's nothing to attack, Dave. The problem is the irrationality of those in public office and those who put them there. There's a constant war, by Xians, on education.
These 'pillars of morality' are terminally uneducated and have no qualms about lying, cheating, fabricating, and destroying what and whoever gets in their way. The Dover school board is merely a recent example. A great current example is the Texas school board which decimated education based on their stone and bronze age superstition.
More than likely, textbooks will be changed as Texas is a very large market and companies want to make a profit. There's one damned fool Republican who's seeking to head the Technology and Climate Change Committee who's quoted as saying paraphrased Global warming can't happen because your imaginary god promised not to drown the world-again. The problem arises when Xians bring their delusions and fantasies into the real world instead of keeping the drivel in your homes and houses of superstition.
If you're going to do that then it becomes subject to the examination tools you folks hopefully use in other areas of your lives. Oh, yes, said Republican brain dead drooler also said the Bible is infallible and the rest of the rampant stupidities. This person is terminally unqualified for that position.
The problem is I'm certain all other Republicans are just as unqualified. Their beliefs are their own and must be kept separate from their public office job. I have no qualms about torpedoing Xian claims and quotes via their own 'holy book.' Nor do I have a problem telling them the ramifications and repercussions of attributes, claims, and dogma.
The edited writings of pig ignorant stone and bronze people doesn't provide any 'answers. 'The Bible fails from first sentence to last. Reactions have nothing to do with your imaginary 'god.
' Reactions stem from the statements, claims, and actions of believers. Each and everyone of you folks are the driver for any reaction. The phrasing of your questions is a prime example of the problem.
And I don't mean that unkindly. For you, the existence of deity is no different than 'water is wet.
I think it's a little crazy if you ask me! Why run around in religious forums claiming to not care and scream to the top of your lungs that you are tired of God being thrown in your face, when you are in the forums reading and commenting! It seems to me they are there looking for an argument or to debate it!
If they truly didn't want to hear about it, they'd skip over the religious topics and go straight for topics of interest to them! Yet time and time again they click on them! I agree, this is an open forum, but why claim you are tired of something if you continuously enter threads you know are religious?
LOL! I think some are curious, others are angry for one reason or another, and some are just cruel! Others are trying to find proof of their belief that God doesn't exist!
First of all, We shouldn't blame the God or Life which made us and keeps us here all because of someone's sloppy expression of it's flawless characteristics. As a Christian, I can honestly say there are bad twisted, deranged followers within the Christian faith just as there are bad, twisted, deranged followers within every other faith. Even amongst Atheist and Agnostics. My question to us is which version of our faith or belief collective are we.
My problem with my fellow Christians is that for us to wonder why so many "attack" our God, why do we waist just as much energy trying to prove our God exist, forcing those who don't believe to believe like we do. If the scriptures of our faith are true and effective like it's written. Then walk in assurance that it will effectively revolutionize a non-believer's life like it did ours long when we were a non-believer.
When we Christians, Muslims, Atheist, Judiasts, Buddhists, nduists grapple and argue with those who intentionally despise and dispute our belief systems it shows how less we really believe in that belief system ourselves. Christ's(I'm sure as well as Mohammad, Webster, Moses, Buddha, Confuscious and etc.) intent was not to divide but unite and NOT by force; especially not with those who seek love, peace, joy, happiness and a content state of mind. Force should only be use on those who intentionally, blatantly and boldly reject any efforts of bringing peace, clarity and common ground to an environment.
Even if it is some within your collective. They should respectfully be identified and respectfully handled accordingly. That's the intent of any heart beating human or believer; is to bring love, peace and happiness into their world and to those who welcomes themselves in that world.
If we don't have that intent and rather bring discord, hate, deceit, strife and pain, then something is personally wrong with us, the individual and it's US, not the principals or faith we chose to define us, but US that failed at making our belief system perfect. It's IRRATIONAL to make someone honor and respect what we don't honor or respect or haven't had first hand experience of ourselves. God knows every person who believes and don't believe. Therefore every person will have their moment with -L.A.B.werk.
Well Agnostics don't attack God, that's Atheists! Agnostics don't fully dwell in religion and just don't know if there is a God or not. I don't know one Agnostic who attacks God, but I do know Atheists who do so.
DaveMany atheists have already replied to you and my feelings are similar. Growing up in Scotland, religion was never a significant part of my life. While people around me (family, friends etc.) claimed to be Christians, no-one was that devout and I became an atheist without that much thinking about it.
The truth is I have no problem whatsoever with you or anyone else practicing any religious belief. The problem I have is that many people don't seem content with practicing their belief themselves, they seek to impose it on others. Blue laws, marriage laws, drug laws, abortion laws etc. To go further, the perception I've always had of Jesus is one of a selfless being filled with nothing but love.
If Christians truly want to follow his example, many (particularly tea party types in America) are going about it the wrong way.As for attacking your God, that really depends on what you mean by "attack". I just want evidence for your God that can't be explained by any other means (i.e. The eyewitness testimony and toast and cloth faces don't count).
Faith just doesn't cut it for me as I don't see why I would be any less rational for believing in Santa, the tooth fairy, the Easter Bunny or such parody concepts as the Flying Spaghetti Monster. That's all there is to it.
I expect, that like most of us, they fear the unknown. People of faith, do not fear God, because He is known to us.
We aren't attacking "God". There is no such thing. What we are attacking is religious wackos such as yourself.
The reason for that is that your belief in "God" is totally stupid. Now, that would not be a problem if you would just shut up about it and stop witnessing and proselytizing for your particular set of wacko beliefs. But you have established stupid religions which are EVIL.
They appeal to idiots, charlatans, and sheep. They are a major source of conflict and stupid social customs. BTW it is not "his" "Holy Book".
It is some book you call " That does not make it so, you (insert your favorite derogatory term/word here).
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
