Why do men in uniform(soldiers, cops, pilots, etc) not make a lot of money?

Pilots used to be well paid and highly respected professionals. As to cops, I've always wondered if a person stands on a line and could go either left or right; antisocial or join the establishment - a kind of violent streak that could take either direction. Soldiers sadly ARE cannon fodder to governments.

That's why they need them very young and malleable. Today, so many kids graduate high school and are faced with no jobs and few choices - that's why so many in the military come from rural and culturally isolated places. Our military is so huge that it is virtually impossible to pay them a decent wage so in compensation we tell them they are gods.

Firemen are rough and ready working class stiffs.

Ps. I should note it depends on your rank obviously. If you're a private you make nothing.

If you're a colonial or above you make a good income, if you're a general you make serious change. Senior, transatlantic airline pilot USED TO make $200 to $250K a year until they cut their salaries in half or less. Older cops in NY still make a living wage but the city now has a two-tiered system.

New recruits literally make 1/2 what they older one's made to start and never earn as much.

Flying wasn't as common as I is today. Everybody, commoners, want to fly and families are separated as people have to move to areas where there are jobs. So flying had to cost less than it used to.

It was a luxury now its a common occurrence and competition is greater than it was. Plus the cost of security must be insane. I don't pretend to understand economics but basically, flying ain't want it once was and for a long time now, there hasn't been as much profit in it.

Because compensation is not based on the value of the contribution to society. Compensation is based on ability to control the market. Thus, the most deserving tend to be paid the least, while the least deserving tend to get paid the most.

It's all part of that whole "life ain't fair" business.

Police put their lives on the line everyday. But in some places they are poorly paid. I have no idea why that is.

But to me what I don't understand is how a football player or a basketball player can make millions out of running a ball up and down the field or basketball court. But the teachers who mold and shape the minds of the young people in school can't get anywhere near that kind of salary. A police officer can't get that salary either.

They risk being shot at,stabbed,run over,cursed at on a regular basis. But they get paid very little. While well know sports figures laugh all the way to the bank.

A policeman's wife and children have to worry about weather her husband is coming home tonight. Kids have to worry if they are going to see their dad again. The same is true if a woman is a cop.

We need police officers to protect the citizens that live in the same cities that they do. If we did not have police officers at all. It is bad now.

But just think about how much worse it could be without them to hold things down. The men in the armed forces go over seas to fight in a war torn battle and many of them make it back home. Cops fight a war torn battle at home on the home front where they are not 100% sure if they are not going to come home tonight or not.

The battle is almost the same except a police officers war is on American soil. They leave their home and families each morning wearing a badge and uniform not knowing if they will make make it back home tonight. Because they are out there trying to keep the peace and maybe being shot at while doing his or her job.

A job that many people know is risky,But it does not pay very much.

Police here in Australia are paid very well. We have strong unions. They are also well educated and require high standards.

Airline pilots are paid very well as far as I know. Our defence forces are well respected and much training is needed to continue on. My son in law is a Naval Deputy Weapons Officer and is paid quite well.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
