Why do mime artists always have sad painted faces?

The Mime artist is a direct descendent of the commedia dell'arte character Pedrolino also Pierrot, he was the lowest status and worked as a baker boy, the white face is the bakers flour. He was deeply in love with the highest status female servant Columbina, because she was the only person to be nice to him, but she in turn was often in love with Arlechinno (the Harlequin).
