I'd say "both. " I'm very ignorant concerning wine, but I do know that I typically prefer the taste of beer.
While I personally prefer beer (which is just as subtle and varied as wine - Budweiser is *a* beer, not indicative of the beer world as a whole), I know just as many men who prefer wine as those that prefer beer. So I'd have to go with it being a matter of taste. I also know plenty of men who prefer scotch over either wine or beer.
Some men believe that beer is more 'masculine' and would rather have a beer can (or bottle) in their hands than a wine glass full of wine. I think alot of it depends on their surroundings at the moment; around a bonfire on the lake=Beer, at a business dinner when the boss is having wine=Wine. It could be from lack of knowledge of wine just because they have never been in a situation to appreciate it.In my female point-of-view it is their 'manhood image' that decides what to order at the bar.
It could be either one, I guess, but usually people can decide strictly with taste what they like better...They don't need to be experts on the subject, but everyone knows what their own personal preferences are...If you love wine, by the way, check out my new hub on the Sierra Foothills wine region in California:hubpages.com/hub/The-Sierra-Foothills-Wine.
