Why do people get their dogs ears cropped?

There is no medical reason........ Ear cropping is done on many breeds - primarily Boxers, Great Danes, Dobermans, Min-Pins, Schnauzers, Bouviers, and American Pit Bull Terriers. In my opinion it is cruel. I know it needs to be done for dog competition, but there is the possibility of complication.

There is no reason to get this done except for cosmetic reasons! The procedure is done at 10-14 weeks of age. It requires full anesthesia, which is somewhat risky, and there is also the chance of blood loss or infection.

After the ears are cut, they need to be bandaged and splinted. This causes pain and sensitivity to the dog's ears :-( It needs to be done correctly, or it may not work. It should be done by a licensed veterinarian to assure that it is done properly.

I do not think that breeders should do it themselves, due to the fact that full anesthesia is required. In October of 2003, the AVMA (Association of Veterinary Medicine) stated that it opposes ear cropping as well as tail docking (another very controversial procedure, although tail docking requires only local anesthesia instead of FULL anesthesia - still cruel in my opinion). It is also now recommended that vets report any suspected cases of animal abuse.

This is a personal opinion, but I would not put my dog through that pain for no reason. Then again, I am a floppy- eared dog lover :-) Please consider what you are doing and weigh the pros and cons before you make your own decision. This picture says it all................ Purely style Whereas there is a reason for neutering a dog, or, with some, surgically removing the dew claws, there is NO medical reason for cropping a dog's ears. The dog is put through surgery at a very young age and often through some time after of ear taping and irriation and/or pain for the sake of the owner's idea of what that dog should look like. Dogs with natural ears do just as well in kennel shows as their cropped-eared competitors.

Dogs with natural ears do not get more ear infections. It is pure vanity on the part of the owner (not the dog), is often expensive, can lead to infections and sometimes does not 'work' if the dog does not have thick enough cartilege in the ears to make them stand up after surgery. Many vetrinarians refuse to crop ears and I applaud that decision.

I feel the same way about cropped tails. Mangling a dog for the sake of some artificial look is sick.

I would hope only for medical reasons, but then I know that people do otherwise. I have been told that my black and white puss cat is developing a cancerous lesion on her one white ear. I do try to put sun cream on it when I can get her before she goes outside, but its difficult.

The Vet has said she will have to have the corner of the ear cut off if it gets too far, but also said that as it has taken this long (c10-12 years) to get this far, it could be a long time yet. My daughter Sue said "if it has to be done, she’ll look odd, Mother, but at least you will still have her". Penny is otherwise very well (12) but I dread the day I have to make the decision.

Why can’t people accept their animals (and themselves) as God made them in the first place? .

I work at a vet. I see ear cropping a tail docks daily! The picture you see at the top looks like it was done in a room with no lights lol the dogs that have ear cropping done also go home with pain meds just like a human would comin home from surgery.

Yes it is all for show. Also anesthesia is used on many things sometimes even for nail trimming. If ear cropping was so bad millions of people wouldn't be getting it done, the pain is more annoying if anything.

1 I agree with the person who answered "purely style". There is no medical reason whatsoever. Like tail cropping of dogs, as well as "declawing" (digital amputation) of cats, it is done because the owner wants it done, and doesn't mind putting the animal through that kind of pain and risk.In the UK, all three of these procedures are *illegal*, and I truly wish they were in the US, as well...Katherine .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
