Similar questions: people talk Census takers.
Mostly historical reasons In earlier times (and I supposed even now) any government person was seen as a potential threat. This was particularly true in the South and Southeast, where your taxes were base don how many slaves you owned, or how much property you had, or *more importantly* if you were distilling your own whiskey and weren't paying the federal tax on distilled spirits. People didn't make the differentiation between a census taker and a 'revenuer' who was there to assess taxes.
And so this suspicion of any government person coming to your door, or one your land, was developed. Now the reasoning is more irrational. Strict laws prevent information sharing with other agencies, but people have this irrational fear that the census is one step towards fascism.(Note that the right wing helps to repeat this myth).
Government isn't popular, even though the constitution (that the right wing is so fond of calling the fundamental spine of their being) calls for a census every 10 years. Lots of people are irrational..
I don't usually answer the door if I'm not expecting someone. I think we aren't used to strangers coming up and ringing the doorbell and asking personal questions. At least that was the way I felt.
The guy that came (just recently) was nice enough. I didn't let him in the house. He did have his I.D. on and everything, but it was warm enough that I stepped outside and answered the questions. It was quite painless.
But I'm just wary of people ringing the doorbell if I'm not expecting someone. I knew to be expecting someone though, as there was a notice in the local newspaper. Otherwise, I may not have answered the door.
So, for me, it wasn't about the Census taker, per se, it was about the seemingly 'in your face' way it is done. Sources: me autumn00™:0)'s Recommendations Bath Salt Assortment: "In Your Face!" .
You know that, and I know that because I worked for them. But these folks who are asked don't know that. I was merely asking (verifying) addresses for the soon-to-be-mailed forms (a valuable part, as one example of a change was a house in the middle of a field had become and entire apartment complex.) But I had one guy (as example) hear, "Good afternoon, sir.
May I ask, what is your address here? " "Look it up in your Funk and Wagnalls." Slam.
You can guess what I thought I heard at first, but even so, the guy obviously was a Laugh-In fan from 30 years previous (he was old enough) but he was also rude. On the other hand, I knock and nothing happens, but I hear noises, so I wait, and three minutes later I think I didn't hear what I thought I heard and I'm about to leave and the door opens. It took the lady that long to get to the door. And she was concerned that I have a nice day.
So some are blessings and some are curses, like any random assemblage of human beings. But we definitely are a less trusting society. "And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold" (Matthew 24:12).
I think a lot of people behind those doors are illegals. Secondly, I think many believe they use this for a tax base. In other words, the IRS didn't know you were there and will be knocking at your door..
