Belief is a powerful thing. Propagandas, religious or otherwise, are tools to motivate individuals to act in ways that seem 'right' from a certain context and perspective, but is completely isolated from the bigger picture. Its not just religions.
Any idea that can create 'us vs them' dichotomy' can fuel some awful actions. Wars are a direct result of this. Personally I don't think people are so 'simple' to classify.
Every person has a history of life experiences, their personal interpretation, an orientations and world view and therefore a specific 'vulnerability' to certain propaganda ideas over others. They could be convinced to do anything. This potential exists in every individual.
