Why do some people have an affinity for the strange or uncanny or bizarre (horror or just weird), and others don't?

I like some horror movies and I am fascinated by places that have a weird atmosphere. Admittedly I like places with extremely pleasant atmosphere too, but I always like something to be a little strange or otherworldly. A few of my friends share this interest, but a few of my closest friends find this interest of mine very unhealthy and risky -- they want everything on the level, no weird at all.

Its as if anything ominous or arcane borders on Satanic -- even if its a mystery or ambiance. Asked by Yellowdog 11 months ago Similar questions: people affinity strange uncanny bizarre horror weird Society > Holidays.

I like Medieval murder mysteries and historical novels. What does that say about me from a moral or spiritual perspective? .

I don't quite get your point. Are you saying that what a person likes or has an affinity for is perceived as a denoter of what that person is like? For instance, if I built a model of the Bates Motel and Psycho house, some people might think I am kinda a Norman Bates Wannabe?(actually, indeed some would, but is that a COMMON interpretation)?

One other thought, many like horror and the weird, but few do anything about it like build models or collect memorabellia or create strange atmospheres. If I interpreted your point correctly, you may be right on. A friend of mine once warned me that people look at the creator of the art or artifact as a red flag if his/her work is bizarre or strange.

No. You just like chocolate ice cream and your friends like vanilla. It reminds me of the guy in a forum who claim William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a pedophile because of all the cherubs in his work.

We as humans have a natural fascination with destruction as well as creation. Creation, sustenance and destruction are the three laws that govern the universe. Each one is an aspect of the other and could not manifest without the actions of the others.

A decaying body is a natural occurrence. We have been taught about it via the term ‘morbid’. Anything that speaks to the destructive force of nature is ‘morbid’.

How is it morbid to be fascinated as an organic body breaks down? It is an act of genius. Perhaps if we were allowed to understand the wisdom in what we call morbidity we wouldn’t have such a difficult time coming to terms with death.

Children naturally have an innocent fascination with the destructive side of life. How have most humans grown to fear it? Some people are just more drawn to the mysterious under belly of life.It is no less ‘sacred’ of a truth.

All that symbolizes hunger, the vampyric myths, the super human myths the exploration into elegance in the forbidden are very popular now. Some of our greatest art forms have arisen from places of seeming darkness. These places can be a beautiful, rich and nurturing place, like the Cosmic womb because out of the darkness comes all light.

It can be a romantic, intoxicating place that speaks to the oldest fibers of our souls and is understood. It is merely one of three laws that are equally as good, as evil, if you will, as anything as a person decides to interpret them to be. I think one of the reason people are fascinated with slasher films is that they were forbidden to understand the beauty and the nature of the human body in its undoing.

I am not referring to the insanity of harming another human being, but the sheer idea of the human body in pieces, for example. Why not? We are these organic life forms and we have insides.

But we are discouraged to think about those things, why? Why are cemeteries frightening? I love hanging out in cemeteries.

I love dark, heavy music when I'm in the mood, I love the vampire myth and its attentive passion and hunger, its immortality. It just all goes back to what we are taught. Darkness, evil, Satan, blah blah blah.

The only true evil is ignorance. The only true darkness is the light that blinds one from the beauty inherent in all three laws of creation. So there's nothing wrong with you. You have a soul that's drawn to the underbelly of life.

You like old Sanitariums and things that go bump in the night.Me too. Its just how some of us are wired.

Then again, maybe I didn't understand your question.

You're welcome. I had nothing else to do at the moment.

I think younger/college age may like this kind of thing...but it may disappear later in life. I can't handle violent/sad/war etc movies any more. Just stay connected with God.

We are all wired differently, we have generations of genetic material that also influences our behaviour and tendencies. What is most significant is parential influences and our early years in development. You are a sum total of all this 'stuff.' And what could be interlaced with all this is our susceptability to anxiety, depression or other unstable traits.

So your reality is shaped by this conglomeration of input. Jexebellion 11 months ago.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
