Why do we get swept away by philosophic rhetorics instead of applying hard rational logic to reach conclusions?

It is religion that tries to shut down philosophical argument (in the true meaning of the word). One of my degrees is in philosophy an I welcome discussion. To illustrate, let me give you an example of what I mean: When I was doing my full time degree, I was a member of the philosophy Soc.

We invited the Christian Soc to have a discussion on the meaning and existence of God.. We sat opposite each other, our independent Chair started by outlining what was meant by the question and then opened the floor to us all. We on the philosophy side of the table started with an analysis of the ontological proof of the existence of god and why it was flawed. The Christians just read from the Bible and sang hymns.

Thus no discussion. So, it would be better to address your question to Christians as to why they will not argue, only quote from the Bible. As for the spirit behind your question, I am perfectly happy for Christians, Muslims, Jews, Wiccans, indeed anyone, to hold their views, even listen to them (as I do on a daily bases as a counsellor and therapist), it is when they try to force their beliefs onto others that I get angry.

I support keeping it to ourselves. Our subjective experiences are only 'subjectively' relevant. We can never convince another of our own perspective.

The real reason why the debate continues is because it is relevant in terms of politics and law and policies. That kinda affects everyone involved. If common ground could be reached and we all agree to 'live and let live', there would be no need to assert one position at the cost of another by refuting.

The religious people began the persecution and science was always at odds with religion simply because religion sought to actively persecute those who do not agree with their terms. So the source of the conflict is rooted in the very need for science.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
