Why does sage work on spirits?

Actually, it usually doesn't. The best way to deal with an unwanted human spirit is to firmly ask it to leave, as an entire family and make sure that you are all in agreement. However, smudging or sage does sometimes work on inhuman spirits like demonics, because it creates a sacred place that they aren't comfortable with.

Sage doesn't work on spirits who have crossed and may not work on earthbound spirits.
