Why does the body need potassium?

Potassium is an electrolyte with levels that are tightly controlled throughout the body, potassium plays an important role in the electrical conduction in nerve, muscle, and heart tissues and is followed carefully if you are on a water pill. High levels can be caused by adrenal tumors, diabetes, renal insufficiency, congestive heart failure, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Low levels may be caused by vomiting and diarrhea.
