Why doesn't pubic hair grow like the hair on the head?

Short, coarse, and curly, pubic hair never gets a chance to grow long because it has a short growth period. Within six months, the follicle dies and the hair falls out. Pubic hair, which acts as a buffer to reduce chafing, provides a large surface area to disperse pheromones (the chemicals of attraction).

When it grows in--one of the first signs of puberty--it starts as downy, straight hair, and then progresses to coarse, curly hair that starts to form a triangle above and around the genitals. Fully developed, pubic hair may extend out to the thighs, and for guys, up to the belly button (creating more of a diamond of hair than a triangle).
