Sorry, not me. Not often I agree with you sherlock, but you’re spot on. We should have withdrawn our bid and cited undue influence and corruption as the reason for doing so.
I’m a big football fan so I watched Panorama. I said on Monday, we should tell FIFA to stick their World Cup and I’m not disappointed we didn’t win. Tax free jolly for the old boys of FIFA and the FA.
No wonder they’re so desperate to get their hands on it. Our governments haven’t worked out the costs, yet we’re being told that the UK will be better off by £3 billion. Holland has done a detailed financial study on hosting the World Cup and they reckon that they’ll be 150,000,000 Euros worse off to host the World Cup.
I’m sure the figure would be similar for Britain. The two most corrupt nations from each of the bidding groups, 2018 and 2022, won. We weren’t corrupt enough and I think England should be proud of that fact.
In fact, I’d go further than that. Until FIFA clean up their dirty corrupt act, the whole of the EU should not bid for future World Cups. With a public profile bid team of Sebastian Coe, Prince William, David Cameron, Jeremy Hunt and ….
Oh yeah maybe we should have someone connected with English football …. David Beckham, we had NO chance, and the ONE vote we secured beside our own proved that. Thank God we didn’t win, we never would have heard the end of smarmy Cameron telling us how he secured the World Cup for Britain and we might never get rid of him.
Football is a ‘working class’ game the world over and if the Tories and Toffs of England who know nothing about and show absolutely no passion for football had stayed at home, then we might have had a slim chance. England be proud that football’s not coming home. It’s a dirty, corrupt, nepotistic, discredited game now, but like the prodigal son, we’ll welcome you home with open arms of joy when you’ve cleaned up your act.
The IOC Committee ( Olympics ) used to be a corrupt organisation operating under the same sort of corruption as FIFA. Then scandals brought that organisation into disrepute. About 20 years ago they decided to clean up their act.
Football will go through the same sort of scandal and disrepute. It is said that about 50% of Russian football is fixed, 60 – 70% in Asia and there have been many betting scandals and prosecutions in China, Korea, etc with Premiership involvement. The ICC is also corrupt and operates under the old boys network like FIFA.
Look at the reputation of cricket at the moment. If football goes the same way, then it will be FIFA’s fault and it will cost them more in the long run. If the IOC can clean up their act then FIFA and the ICC should also be capable of cleaning up their acts too.
No matter what happened there would still be moaning. We moan because we didn't get the World Cup, regardless of the reasons, yet had England got it, I would probably expect loads of moaning as to it being hosted in England (such as who pays for it etc etc). We have the Olympics in 2012.
We have the Commonwealth Games in 2014 (yes, I know it is in glasgow in Scotland, but let's not nit-pick, Scotland is still in the UK). Let's not be greedy!
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
