Why focusing on biosphere reserves?

Biosphere reserves are protected areas designated by the UNESCO in the framework of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MaB). They are meant to be no mere conservation category, but "model regions for sustainability" where the often conflicting objectives of conserving biological diversity, promoting human development and maintaining associated cultural values should be balanced. Involving all regional stakeholders, potentials for sustainable interactions between human and nature should be detected.

This participatory approach stimulates initiatives of individual persons or groups who actively participate in the development and positioning of their own region. The global network of 531 biosphere in 105 countries (March 2008) facilitates common strategies and a constant exchange of experiences and knowledge. People living in biosphere reserves and willing to set up eco-friendly businesses shall be supported by facilitating access to loans.
