I've explained this a thousand times, but I'll copy and paste for everyones edification: I'm so SICK of hearing Americans refer to Latin Americans as "Latino" or "Latin". When and HOW did they become EITHER of those? First, Latino IS synonymous with Latin.
This term is NOT an American invention, but a REAL word. It simply means Latin in Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. Latin/o/a is NOT an ethnic or racial term.
It can apply to either the *basically* dead language, all languages derived from it (Italian, being the closest, along with Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Romanian), countries with a mainly Latin culture, OR the original Latin people, an Italian tribe. I don't know HOW people began to think of this as applying strictly to Latin Americans: Probably, they were called Latins because people knew of their Latin European/Spanish colonial heritage, and later on this was changed to "Latino", probably to sound cool or more authentic. SOMEWHERE along the line, this corruption crept into the everyday man's vocabulary, and is now FALSELY seen as a racial term (when in reality, Latin Americans like those from the U.S., are a people too diverse to be seen as ONE race - the idea that they SHOULD is complete ignorance).
Now, WHERE do all things Latin originate? That's right: Italy! ITALY simply shared its culture and language with other Latin Europeans (mainly Spanish, Portuguese, and French, but also Romanians) and the Spaniards shared it with the indigenous peoples of Latin America (in a fashion justly considered MOST brutal).
So, YES, by extension Latin Americans can be considered Latin/o/a because they speak a Latin derived language and have a generally Latin (albeit, heavily influenced by Native AMERICAN) culture, the term by NO means applies STRICTLY to them. ADD: Leonel Nothing much. I've been busy with my move to TX in all.
I had to take a break from this section, because it was getting on my nerves (and I was getting WAY too addicted). So I forced myself to stay off for a month. Now I'm back... I see from your username you left, too.
Do you still have the "darkest hair ever", lol? ADD: Leonel And by that do you mean your neighbors finally put a lock on their WiFi?
Because they speak Spanish and Portuguese (TWO LATIN LANGUAGES) ---------------------------------------... Hispanus was the Latin name given to a person from Hispania during Roman rule (SPAIN/PORTUGAL). Nowadays, the terms Hispanic tend to be used interchangeably in the United States for people with origins in Spanish-speaking countries, like Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Peru, etc.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
