Vaseline is not good for your skin because it sticks to the skin and can't be cleaned off, even with soap and water and a washcloth. Vaseline is particularly nasty because the greasy film will attract dirt to your skin and make it stick there, irritating the skin. The film left behind can clog up pores leading to blackheads.
Vaseline is good for patches of extremely dry, chapped sore skin as it forms a protective greasy film over the very dry areas where the skin's moisture barrier is compromised. Vaseline is also the base for many lip-balms, where you want the protective film to remain on the lips and protect them. Mineral oil is a different product, and far better for skin.
