Every page has a "Link Submission" option, where you can submit links that you believe are missing from the page, Mahalo has a team of curators that receive each link and add them into the appropriate spot on the page, in a perfect world when those curators update the page with the new link they would ensure that the entire page is up to date, perhaps no new links have been submitted to the Belmont page in a long time. (Although I also realize the link submission section of each page has been broken for months. mahalo.com/Special:Mahalouserlinks?page_... that is a real problem Mahalo needs to fix) Mahalo has an editorial process on how links are presented on the page, its been difficult enough to teach all 40(?) employees that standard, let alone 40,000+ users.
The new editorial standards were implemented not too long ago, I think you just stumbled into a page that hasn't been updated. There are lots of older pages that still need updating, and I am sure Veronica's page will be updated after this post. Most pages get updated by curators once there is some sort of traffic spike on the topic.
Link editing is not open, not because Mahalo doesn't trust their users, but because it could become a moderating headache. In my humble opinion I appreciate the fact that each page has been built by actual employees and have not had random links added by users or fly by the night link builders. When I visit any Wiki page with an "edit" button at the top, it losses credibility instantly.
If you submit a link, it will get added if it ads value to the page. I don't know anything about "Runscape", but if you submit those links I am sure they will get added.
Thanks for the feedback! We always appreciate it. As for an explanation as to why the page is outdated, that's because we have tens of thousands of pages in our system.
We certainly encourage the public to make suggestions and point out when pages need an update (as you have just done) to help us keep everything as fresh as possible. Unfortunately, unless a page is in the news or requires some kind of obvious update (if Ms. Belmont, for example, got a new high-profile job or did something significantly newsworthy), it can sometimes slip through the cracks. As I was just about to update the page now, I noticed that another Mahooligan, Jeff Hoard, has already started improving the page.
This is exactly the way Mahalo is intended to work - human curated results pages maintained by full-time employees and an active community of users. So just by bringing this to our attention, you have helped our site. Thanks again!
When you do, you can add comments (if using Mahalo's share bar) about how the top 7 links don't work or that the content is irrelevant.
It's great because you don't have to be on Mahalo to do it. You can find out more on How to Use Mahalo Share. It can be frustrating when you find a page with outdated links. However, Mahalo wants to keep spammy and ad-heavy sites off of their pages.
I'll answer your question with a question. What financial incentive do the writers of that page have to keep it up to date? It's the same problem that plagues Knol pages.
People are happy to edit wikipedia pages for free, because it's considered a resource. Here, or at Knol, money is involved, so instead of having autistic people who really, really care about a subject maintaining your articles, you have people who are trying to throw up as many half-ass pages as possible to get their share. This is a broad generalization, and there are many people who write for Mahalo, and I'm sure Knol as well, who genuinely want to do a good job.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
