The chicken could be getting ill for many reasons. Poor immune system, nutritional deficiency, poor sanitation in the coop. Lack of ventilation in a chicken coop is more often than not the culprit when the birds develop eye irritation.
Dust in the air will effect both eye and lungs. Vent your coop, set up evacuation fans to blow poor air out and draw clean air in, if the outside is particularly dusty, use filters on the air intakes. Sanitize your coop area with water and bleach to kill off communicable diseases and offer a water soluble tonic to boost the whole flocks immune systems.
